Alan Bean
BIOGRAPHY
Alan LaVern Bean (March 15, 1932 – May 26, 2018) was an American astronaut, naval officer, and painter. Selected by NASA in 1963 as part of Astronaut Group 3, he flew as the Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 12, the second crewed lunar landing, in November 1969. During the mission he performed two EVAs totaling 7 hours 45 minutes, becoming the fourth person to walk on the Moon. After leaving NASA in 1981, Bean pursued a career as an artist, creating paintings that depicted his lunar experiences. He authored several books and was a frequent public speaker on space exploration. Bean received the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, NASA Exceptional Service Medal, and the American Astronautical Society Flight Achievement Award. He died on May 26, 2018 at the age of 86.
